Do you gap Trex decking?
You must gap Trex® decking, both end-to-end and width-to-width. Gapping is necessary for drainage and the slight thermal expansion and contraction of Trex decking boards. Gapping also allows for the shrinkage of the wood joist system.
How much overhang should a Trex deck have?
Trex is a popular composite material with a maximum overhang of 102mm or around 4 inches. Between one and two inches of deck board overhang is ideal when you attach an outer fascia board, or at least 1 ¾” to 2 ¾” of overhang before installing the fascia.

How far apart should joists be for Trex decking?
Most composite and PVC decking brands, like Trex and Azek, recommend a maximum joist spacing of 16 inches OC. Some brands, like WearDeck, let you get away with more – reinforced with a layer of fiberglass on both the top and bottom, WearDeck boards easily allow for spans of 24 inches OC.
Why is my composite deck warping?
Warping occurs when the decking’s surface is exposed to sunlight. The decking becomes hot and starts to distort gradually. It happens during thermal expansion when the decking absorbs heat from the sun and expands. The heat from the sun causes the decking to be flexible.
What do you put under composite decking?
However, you will need a good base for the composite decking. Many use concrete flooring and concrete slabs for an even and stable base. Some also use adjustable pedestals. Using pressure-treated wood or composites will make a strong and durable frame.

Composite deck stairs are typically made from 2 x 12 pressure-treated stringers spaced about 8 to 16 inches apart. They rest on a solid foundation and are attached to the deck with hangers.
How do you stagger Trex decking?
“Stagger your boards so their ends are in different spots.” Slide the next board in so it’s parallel to the first. The sliding motion is important, as you want the spacer to fit in the groove of this board, too. Basically, you’ll have two boards with the spacer between them.
How far apart should Trex be?
Most composite decking materials, like Trex, AZEK, TimberTech and Fiberon composite decking, require minimum joist spacing for composite decking at 16″ on-center spacing for straight decking and 12″ on-center joist spacing for 45-degree angle diagonal decking.
How do I fasten my Trex fascia board?
ALWAYS refer to manufacturer instructions to ensure that recommended screws can be used for fascia applications. The top screw should be placed 1″ from the top of the rim joist, the second screw in the center of the rim joist, and the third screw 1″ from the bottom of the rim joist.
