Do you need rebar in a sonotube?
We usually recommend that a minimum of two pieces of #4 rebar be placed vertically in an 8-inch-diameter concrete pier supporting a structure. A larger-diameter pier should have four or more pieces of vertical rebar.
Does a sonotube need a footing?
Once adjustments have been made, your Sonotube should stand evenly on its own. However, if you are using an in-ground footing, your tube should sit evenly on top of it. In theory, your Sonotube should stay in place on its own.
How many cubic feet is a 12 inch sonotube?
1 cubic foot is a box 12 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches, so the calculation to convert cubic inches to cubic feet must use 12x12x12 = 1,728 cu. in.
How deep should Sonotubes be?
Determine how deep you want your tubes. Dig down to the frost line before pouring the concrete. Frost lines vary depending on your region. Start by assuming you want a 10-inch diameter Sonotube that is about 3 feet deep.
Can you leave sonotube in the ground?
No, it’s not a problem to leave the Sonotube and its plastic “Square Foot” (like these) in the ground forever. Although they will slightly retard the hydration (loss of water) of the concrete mix, the concrete will achieve enough strength in a few days to build upon.
How many 50lb bags of concrete make a yard?
If you’re using 50lb bags of concrete, you’ll need 72 bags to make a yard. If you’re using 60lb bags of concrete, you’ll need 60 bags to make a yard.
Are there Square Sonotubes?
Sonotube Square concrete forms are available in standard lengths up to 20 feet, and in standard square column dimensions ranging from 12 x 12 inches to 24 x 24 inches. Custom sizes are also available for order.

How long do Sonotubes need to cure?
One week is plenty for a simple deck footing with a normal dead load of only 10 lbs/sqft. If you used premix bags of concrete, like Sakrete, this mix may have a very high strength (4,000 lbs) and likely OK in just 72 hours. If so, check the bag.
